Manuscript Evaluation – Critique
This affordable book critique service is for writers who have completed an early draft or who have just started their manuscript and want a critique on their first chapter and synopsis or outline.
Full or Partial Manuscript
You’ve finished your first draft. Perhaps you feel there are problems with your plot or your character motivations or maybe you just want to tighten the structure, but you aren’t sure where to start. You are too close to it. I will read your full or partial manuscript in its entirety and provide you with a detailed critique of its strengths and weaknesses in terms of structure, characterization, setting, pacing, etc. This will give you an arms-length, objective review of your story early in the process and allow you to do a substantive rewrite before you incur any expense having it edited or proofread. Cost: One cent per word.
I hope you won't mind if I take this moment to let you know how much I appreciate your insights and instincts. No matter how many professional credits an editor may have, the bottom line for anyone paying for editing assistance is, "How will this person work with me?"You have been a joy to work with, and I now consider you a great team asset in my writing career. You have the ability to help me hone skills and polish my work while remaining respectful and encouraging toward the challenges of writing a book. Your own experience has given you insight into what a writer goes through, and you have the ability to use this knowledge to benefit your clients. Thank you for your timely and consistent efforts with Paperwood One: Things Undone. I look forward to working with you again on my next project. Deen Ferrell, Author, Paperwood One: Things Undone
Outline Evaluation
You’re still in the early stages of writing your novel. You have an outline for the story you want to tell and have written a chapter or two but you aren’t sure if the plot is believable. Are the characters’ motivations realistic in the circumstances? Is your ending too predictable? I will read your outline and first chapter and point out plot holes as well as providing you with a detailed critique on the strengths and weaknesses of your story and characters. This will allow you to correct any major structure problems before you begin to write and avoid wasting your time and energy rewriting the manuscript at a later date and give you a stronger basis for your story so that you can concentrate on the important details that make the story real. Cost: $100 for an outline evaluation
First Chapter
You’ve finished your first chapter. Of course you think it’s a great idea but will other people feel the same way. Have you chosen the best perspective for your story? Your first chapter has the most important job of all. It has to grab the reader and pull him into the story. It has to raise questions and tweak the reader’s curiosity. It has to promise something. Have you set your story up in the most dynamic way possible? Does the first chapter do its job of setting the story in motion and allowing the reader to identify with the hero? I will read your first chapter and the brief summary of your story (a synopsis) and then: - evaluate its strengths and weaknesses in terms of establishing character identification, setting the story in motion, and creating a vivid setting.
- edit the chapter so that you can see any necessary corrections or consistent problems in the writing.
- give input on problems I find and offer helpful suggestions for how to strengthen the chapter and story overall.
- suggest alternative ways you might go with the story considering the underlying themes you are dealing with.
Cost: *special rate of $45 rate for a first chapter of 10 pages (or 2500 words) and $4 a page for any additional pages. (*this is a little over half the regular rate)
"Ms. Wilson is extremely professional and knowledgeable in this field. She is an expert on delivering punchy openings, developing engaging conflict and has the ability to view the whole story for structure and overall effect. As well as being technically proficient in many styles, she also possesses a rich imagination, offering suggestions and alternatives in a way that doesn't impose on the writer's own style. Her observations are honest and valuable, beyond what many others can give. I highly recommend her."A. Rigby, Freelance WriterGoldstream, Alaska
