What you Get with the Extensive Power Novel Writing Course

creative online writing courses

  • The Writer’s Craft—Novel Building Workbook—a compilation of lessons that lead you step by step through the process of planning, writing and publishing your novel.

  • A questionnaire that allows you to evaluate how much planning you should do for your novel so that you can customize your own process to suit your style of writing.

  • Professional feedback, brainstorming sessions, and support throughout the process of planning and writing your novel.

  • Critique level feedback throughout the actual writing of your novel. ($1000 value as a separate service.) I will provide critique for each chapter as you write at such a level as to give you the feedback you need without overwhelming you and suppressing the creative process.

  • A complete edit and critique of your submission package (query, synopsis and first three chapters) * (The value of this service alone is $350 but it is included in the course)

  • Professional support as you submit your manuscript to agents or publishers so that you can get your questions answered, even if it has been some time since you’ve completed the course.

  • Premise--the idea for your story. I evaluate up to three ideas and advise you as to which one seems most viable. I also give feedback on areas of your idea that are particularly good and those which may need strengthening. In other words, I try to poke holes in your story ideas so that you can strengthen them before you plan and write your book.

  • Characters--you will get my personal character sketch forms that I use for my own writing. Once you complete these, your plot will start to come together on its own. I will evaluate your character sketches and make sure all of the major characters are well rounded and point out any problems with their motivations.

  • Setting--I will send you the forms that I use to establish my settings and will offer you feedback on what you fill in so that you can create detailed settings with lots of sensory input. This will be the basis for what allows the reader to feel like he’s right there with your character.
  • Plot--I offer several different models for plot and allow you to choose which works best for you. You will then plot your novel in as much detail as you choose.

  • Charts--I will also offer several different types of documents that allow you to stay organized as you write—scene charts, timelines, calendars, etc. While these aren’t a necessary assignment, they can be used to keep you on track. The more complicated your plot, the more you’ll use these documents.

  • Openings--I will show you how to create openings that will grab your reader right from the beginning.

  • Writing--I will be with you every step of the way as you write your entire novel--even if it takes you up to two years to complete. You will never be stuck and alone as you write. I will always be available to offer support and brainstorming help--say goodbye to writer’s block.

  • Critiquing--I will read every chapter you write and provide critique level feedback on each one. This is one of the most important elements of the course. Where editorial feedback might become overwhelming and stymie the creative process, critique level feedback offers you guidance and brainstorming help when necessary, keeping you on track as you write. This helps you write faster and smarter.

  • Query letter and Synopsis--I will be there to field questions as you follow the advice in the workbook and write the marketing materials necessary for you to seek representation of a literary agent or publication from a small publisher.

  • Editing--I will provide a full edit for your submission package (query, synopsis and first three chapters *) once you have completed your novel. Editing at this stage will help to polish the writing rather than hindering the creative process.

* The manuscript three chapter sample should be limited to no more than 10,000 words.

You will have 20 weeks to complete this 12 week course. Time extensions may be made on an individual basis.

Sherry Wilson's step-by-step method helped me organize my thoughts and transform a simple idea into a full-fledged plot. Without her help and guidance, I'd still be walking around with just another "great idea for a story."

Thanks to Sherry, though, I've published three novels and know there are more on the way!

~ Debi Faulkner, Summoning, LilyPad Princess and Murphy's Law

"Sherry is extremely professional and knowledgeable in this field. She is an expert on delivering punchy openings, developing engaging conflict and has the ability to view the whole story for structure and overall effect.

As well as being technically proficient in many styles, she also possesses a rich imagination, offering suggestions and alternatives in a way that doesn't impose on the writer's own style.

Her observations are honest and valuable, beyond what many others can give. I highly recommend her."

A. Rigby, Freelance Writer Goldstream, Alaska

"WOW! I have had a quick read of your comments and I must say they are awesome! You are thorough, I like that. Yes, I agree with all of your suggestions for they definitely improve the story. I'm eager now to commence corrections.

I really appreciate the work you've done so far. I'm glad you didn't rush. You provide excellent value for your services."

--Lena Jones

"Sherry Wilson has a deep understanding of the craft of writing and a natural gift for the art of writing. As an editor, she uses both these attributes. Her editing is thorough and precise, encompassing all the craft issues: grammar, sentence structure, active voice and so on. But she goes beyond the basics to find the heart and soul of the story, helping the writer to capitalize on his unique assets.

Being an editor myself, there are not too many people I would trust with my own work. Sherry is one of them."

Sandy Tritt, editor and CEO Inspiration for Writers
